What did you just say?? Yes, You’re Sexist, a Twitter handle which has 1,503 followers, re-tweets people who preface their misogynistic statements with phrases like ‘I’m not trying to be sexist, but…’

Some of the most recent tweets that have been put in the spotlight include: ‘I’m not being sexist or anything but 99% of the time it’s a woman who’s texting/talking on their phone and driving stupid’.

The Twitter page was apparently inspired by two other handles with similar aims, Yes You’re Racist and Yes You’re Gaycist.

Many of the posts refer to the stereotypical notion that cars and sports are a ‘man’s domain’.

In one such tweet, a man named Jim states: ‘I hate to sound sexist. But women shouldn’t talk sports on TV. And they should certainly not be comedians. #knowyourrole’

Another shamed Twitter user confesses: ‘I know it’s sexist but I hate when girls drive really nice cars because they don’t know how to treat them’.

One user even goes so far as to make an irrelevant topical reference: ‘This is not a sexist statement,’ he begins. ‘But the Mandela family troubles remind us why a family must be headed by a man.’

This isn’t the first attempt at exposing sexism in the social media world.

In May, British writer and activist Joan Smith partnered with Swedish equal opportunities group Crossing Borders to launch Twee-Q, a service that tells you which gender you re-tweet most often.

Twee-Q, which stands for Twitter Equality Quotient, analyzes your last 100 tweets, checking the names and genders of those who you have re-tweeted.

It then gives you a score out of ten, ten being an equal male/female re-tweet distribution.
