A 23-year-old shop manager has given birth to a healthy 7lb baby unexpectedly, nine months after having her tubes tied.
Destini Free did not know she was pregnant until her waters broke on July 12. Thirty eight minutes later her son, Christian, was born.
The Texas mother, who has three other children, said: ‘He’s just my blessing. He’s my miracle baby.’
Ms Free said she was surprised to find herself pregnant because she had tubal litigation – where the fallopian tubes are blocked to prevent pregnancy – in October last year.
More commonly known as ‘getting your tubes tied’ tubal litigation is a surgical procedure to block the fallopian tubes and prevent pregnancy.
During the procedure the tubes can either be cut, tied or blocked using small implants that cause scarring.
Only five out of 1,000 women who have their tubes tied will become pregnant in the first year, according to webmd.
Women are advised to use an alternative form of birth control for three months after the initial surgery in case of pregnancy.
About five in every 1,000 women become pregnant after the surgery, but the 23-year-old told KHou: ‘It’s possible. Trust me, it’s possible.’
After her waters broke Ms Free drove herself to Sweeny Community Hospital, but was told that it did not have a maternity ward.
The new mother and baby were then taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch for a check up.
It was while she was at the university hospital that Ms Free was told about the risk of pregnancy after having a tube-tying procedure.
‘The doctor said that there is a 1 per cent chance it didn’t work,’ she said.
It wasn’t just the new mother who was surprised by Christian’s arrival. When the hospital called her aunt to tell her the news she said: ‘Destini who?’
‘She just looked like a normal person, not pregnant,’ Joyce Free said. ‘When I got the call, and they said Destini, she had a boy, I said, “Destini who?” Everybody was saying,” Destini who?”.’
His arrival may have been unexpected, but Ms Free, who works up to 60 hours a week as the manager of a Family Dollar store, is already besotted with her new arrival.
‘He’s a blessing, and I love him to death already,’ she said. ‘I wouldn’t give him up for anything in the world. He’s here. He’s my miracle baby.’
