Man suffering heart attack at JFK dies after security doors in new $1.4 billion terminal won’t allow first responders inside
- Two separate rescue teams had issues with security doors at new airport addition

But doors in the Delta terminal failed to open as rescue teams attempted to rush to Adekunle’s aid.
It began around 6:30am when the Port Authority emergency operator got the call that Adekunle has collapsed and was breathing, but unresponsive.
When the Port Authority ambulance, known as Medical One, made it to the high-tech terminal, they couldn’t get inside because their security badges simply wouldn’t open the doors.
Two minutes later, the rescuers were finally inside, reports the New York Post.
The team of EMTs then expected the better-equipped and trained fire department rescue teams to arrive and take over, but they too experienced issues entering the pricey new addition.
The second delay again cost Adekunle precious time.
A source told the Post that a JFK officer unsuccessfully used his card twice on one security door in an attempt to let the second rescue team inside and then failed to open another door at the terminal thereafter.
After all the issues, the ailing Adekunle was finally taken to the rescuers at their ambulance instead of them going to him.
He was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he was declared dead.
A spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey said the incident was being investigated.
Meanwhile, Delta Airlines denied responsibility to the Post.
Terminal 4 was completed in the spring of 2013 ‘as part of a $1.4 billion investment’ according to the Delta website, aimed at providing a 21st century airport to New York ‘designed to provide you with a more comfortable, convenient, airport experience.’
The JFK website boasts the new terminal’s ‘a consolidated security check point,’ and ‘more efficient screening.’
In spite of the terminal apparent security glitches, Port Authority officials told Gothamist that technically they didn’t contribute to Adekunle ‘since a customs official present for the incident began performing CPR immediately after the heart attack occurred.’
