‘It’s over’: Liam Gallagher ‘gives up on marriage to Nicole Appleton over alleged lovechild’ amid claims he knew about scandal but didn’t tell wife
- Liam Gallagher broke news of lovechild claims in phone call to wife
- Nicole was ‘joking’ with her sisters about the identity of the rocker at the centre of allegations when Liam rang, it is claimed
- She was holidaying with her sisters in Florida when Liam called
Liam Gallagher has given up hope of saving his marriage to Nicole Appleton following claims that he fathered a lovechild, it was reported today.
The former Oasis rocker is ‘sick and tired’ of allegations that he had a baby with 38-year-old American journalist Liza Ghorbani.
He insists the claims are completely untrue but doesn’t think his marriage to the former All Saints singer is worth saving, it was reported.
Nicole’s mother Mary said that Liam has not spoken to his wife since breaking the news that he was the man at the centre of the lovechild claims.
Mary, 72, told the Mail on Sunday her daughter found out about the rock star’s supposed affair during a cursory phone call last Wednesday.
Miss Appleton, 38, was on holiday in Florida with her older sisters Lori, Lee and Natalie while Gallagher was in Ibiza for a music festival.
According to The Sun, Liam believes his five-year marriage is over and not worth fighting for.
‘Liam says he’s had enough of it all – he’s sick of the drama and doesn’t think his marriage is worth fighting for any more,’ a source told the newspaper.
Nicole was joking with her sisters about who the rocker at the centre of a lovechild storm was when her husband phoned and said it was him, the Sunday People claimed.
Her mother Mary told the paper: ‘He phoned her the day before it came out in the paper here to tell her… Nat was telling me that when he called and told her, Nikki went down on her knees and said, “It’s Liam, it’s Liam.” Nat knew what she meant because they had been talking about it.’
Mrs Appleton told the Mail on Sunday the couple have not spoken since the former Oasis frontman broke the news.
She said: ‘That was the first Nicole heard of it. There was absolutely no indication it was coming. She’s absolutely devastated. He’s known about it all along and didn’t tell her a thing, that’s what is most upsetting to us.
‘She found out when everyone else did. She knew nothing about the journalist, she had no inclination. Nicole is in bits. They haven’t spoken since he called her and told her what had happened the day before it was in the papers.’
The journalist is said to have met Gallagher when she interviewed him for The New York Times in May 2010.
She claims they had an affair and she has had a DNA test performed which confirms he is the father of her seven-month-old daughter, Emma. Last year the musician bought a £1.6million apartment in New York.
When asked if the allegations were correct, Mrs Appleton said: ‘He called Nicole so I’m assuming that it’s true. She’s on holiday with her sisters, her two brother-in-laws and her son Gene and stepson Lennon. It wasn’t that she knew and left the country to hide away. She spoke to Liam after she left and everything was fine. He was going to join them, but then she found out. He’s got his ticket but I don’t think he will use it now unless he decides he wants to go and talk to her. I can’t see him using the ticket.’
Clearly shaken and close to tears, Mrs Appleton, said her daughter had not yet told her and Gallagher’s son Gene, 12, or his son Lennon, 13, with his first wife Patsy Kensit.
She said: ‘They don’t know. Nic will tell them before they come home. It’s bad enough for her but she doesn’t want them to feel bad. She doesn’t want to wreck the kids’ holiday.
‘Her friends are so concerned. Natalie wants to kill him. Peggy [Gallagher’s mother] just called her but she wouldn’t speak to her. I spoke to Peggy and she was as shocked and upset as me. I don’t know what to think. It’s been 13 years. This isn’t one of those six-week stupid weddings that [people] have. He was part of the family and we love him. I’ve not got anything nasty to say except, God he’s set us in a tailspin.
‘I think he’s been on a bender for the past few days. He’s not in the right mind, in his right head. And I think once he does that [get himself into the right frame of mind] he’s going to go into a big black hole because he’ll realise what he’s done. We’ll just have to leave it to them. I’m not going to interfere. We’ll let them work it out.’
Asked if she thought the couple would stay together, Mrs Appleton admitted, ‘it’s too soon to say’.
‘I don’t know what’s going to happen next,’ she said. ‘Nicole was supposed to come back in three weeks but I’m not sure now. I don’t think she knows herself when she’ll be back.’
The former All Saints singer began dating Gallagher in 2000, shortly after he split with the actress Patsy Kensit. As well as his two sons, the musician also has a daughter, Molly, 15, by singer Lisa Moorish conceived soon after his wedding to Ms Kensit in April 1997.
One of the few friends whom Miss Appleton has spoken to this week has told The Mail on Sunday she will not tolerate such ‘cliched’ behaviour.
Mrs Appleton, said her daughter (pictured here in 2001) had not yet told her and Gallagher’s son Gene, 12, or his son Lennon, 13, with his first wife Patsy Kensit
The couple married in secret on Valentine’s Day in 2008 and live in a £2.7million five-bedroom house in Hampstead, North London. However, the friend, said: ‘Nicole never wanted to get married. They used to have flaming rows about it. Nic’s argument was she never wanted to risk him cheating on her and that she’d be this sad rock star wife.
‘Nicole doesn’t just feel betrayed by Liam, she’s humiliated and is absolutely furious he has turned her into the very thing she never wanted to be – a clichéd rock wife.
‘Nic is no walkover. She’s been a pop star, her eyes were wide open. Liam used to go berserk and say that being married was the big deal and he wanted to wear a wedding ring, he wanted to be off limits. He used to say she didn’t love him enough because she didn’t want to be his wife. One of the things Nic made a huge deal about was that if they made that public commitment that meant no cheating, no “what happens on tour, stays on tour” behaviour.’
Instead, in the wake of the scandal, Gallagher has acted in typically belligerent fashion. The day the story broke, he sat in the pool bar of his Ibiza hotel, drinking rum cocktails and tequila slammers while talking to a pretty brunette in a bikini. On Friday night he performed at the Benicassim festival near Valencia.
The friend said: ‘His problem in Ibiza was that he didn’t immediately apologise to Nic, say sorry and behave in a grown up way. She told him he had to cancel his shows, deal with this problem. He was telling her he was leaving it to his lawyers and telling her not to get upset. She was screaming and crying at him. Liam wouldn’t acknowledge this is a big problem for them, he was trying to make out it wasn’t true, people were making things up. Nic knew he wasn’t being straight with her. Liam is doing what he has done before – he says nothing, expecting it to go away.
‘Apparently, he’s now saying to people he wants the Duchess of Cambridge to hurry up and pop out her baby so people will forget about his.
‘Liam thinks he’s two people – family man Liam and rock star Liam Gallagher. Now he’s older he’s worried rock star Liam doesn’t have the same cool appeal anymore so he’s reverted to his old ways and it seems that he s****ed some girl who is impressed by him. It’s classic Liam. Stupid. Irresponsible. Pathetic.’
Ms Ghorbani, the daughter of an English-born mother and Iranian father, is a petite blonde with an ample cleavage and a nice line in flattering chatter. One of her friends, who was there the night she met Gallagher, told The Mail on Sunday: ‘We went to the Norwood Club in Manhattan. Liza displayed all the classic signs of a groupie that night. I was shocked.
‘It was around 10pm and they were drinking and hanging out and acting more like friends and lovers than a writer and her subject. I remember feeling very uncomfortable. Liam was with two mates, one his business partner. He was sitting on a sofa with Liza. It was dark, with candlelight, quite romantic. He was drinking a lot of cocktails. Liza was also drinking, which was unusual.
‘All I remember is that Liam wasn’t into hanging out with the group. It was like “OK, that’s enough, time for you guys to leave”. So we did. He wanted to be alone with Liza. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out. She’s not a typical journalist. She’s more interested in becoming friends with stars and hanging out with them.’
It is unclear how long the alleged relationship lasted but Ms Ghorbani is now said to be suing Gallagher in Manhattan Family Court for a reported £2million. Last night, the journalist was believed to be in hiding at her parents’ £500,000 home in McLean, Virginia. Her father, Daryoush, 65, said: ‘She doesn’t want to speak to anyone.’
As to what Nicole will do next is anyone’s guess. Her friend said: ‘Liam is making out he’s not worried. He thinks that in a few months’ time it will all be forgotten but he doesn’t seem to realise it’s up to Nic what happens next, not him. They were really good together. Now, though, I don’t know. She may kick him out for good.’
