They sparked fans’ interest when they released a teaser clip back in May.

But an exclusive new trailer for Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity will have them on the edge of their seats ahead of its eagerly-anticipated opening at the Venice Film Festival next month.

The heart-pounding single-shot sequence shows Sandra Bullock spiraling through space, as desperate co-star George Clooney tries to regain contact with earth.

The new trailer depicts the disastrous consequences of a routine deep space mission gone wrong, with NASA telling them to abort their mission as debris crashes into the shuttle that the two astronauts are working on.

Panic builds as characters Dr Ryan Stone and Matt Kowalsky  played by Bullock and Clooney, realise what has happened and desperately try to reach their base at Houston.

‘We’ve lost Houston,’ screams Kowalsky as realisation sets in that they’re on their own, surrounded by silence and the blackness of deep space.

Then Dr Stone is forced to detach herself from part of the shuttle that she’s attached to and is sent spiralling into space at the end of the terrifying clip.

In a last ditched attempt to reach Earth, Kowalsky can be heard screaming: ‘Houston, I’ve lost visuals on Dr Stone.’

The entire film, produced by Warner Bros, centres around the astronauts’ attempt to save themselves and make their way back home.

Completely alone and tethered to each other, the pair find themselves floating above Earth in a seemingly hopeless situation.

By shooting the trailer sequence in one single shot, Mexican director Cuarón creates a claustrophobic and menacing feel, building moment for the forthcoming release, although he recently admitted that the amount of high-adrenaline action is not representative of the entire film.

Bullock and Cuarón attended San Diego Comic-Con at the weekend to promote the brand new film, which he penned with his son.

The award-winning actress admitted that her fear of heights was an obstacle when shooting the film and she had to use her dance training to help her cope with acting inside a space suit.

‘I was a dancer growing up, and I used my dance training to keep my core strong for such a demanding role,’ she said.

‘They had me strung up on wires for eight to nine hours a day. If you were in pain, either use it or I learned how to meditate. Alfonso gave me boxes of CDs with sounds. Anytime I was in a place, he would just play music for me,’ she added.

Gravity was originally slated for release in November last year but was pushed back so that the post-production effects could be completed.
