Police are investigating after videos have emerged apparently showing students at a Pennsylvania high school smacking younger pupils with hockey sticks in a brutal hazing ritual.

Videos show older students at Upper St Clair High School in Pittsburgh paddling incoming freshman across their bare buttocks, leaving the boys with welts, blisters and red marks on their skin.

The older boys can be heard cheering and laughing as the blows are delivered.

The footage has emerged after parents of students at the school went to police last week to file complaints about the sick rituals, which are believed to be an initiation.

Parents said that 40 of the 180 boys entering their freshman year have been hazed in connection with sports groups, including football, lacrosse and soccer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

About half of those filed complaints with the township police department this week.

Billie Williams, who said her freshman son was recently paddled, told the Upper St Clair Patch that he had been convinced by a senior to go to a park, where he was ‘surrounded’.

She said he was told: ‘You leave now, it’s going to be worse later. If you man up now it’s not going to be worse when we see you in the summer. When we see you at school, you’re not going to be bullied.’

She said that the crowd encouraged the older boy to hit her son harder, but he did not.

‘[The younger boys] felt like they had to go or they would have a miserable freshman year,’ she said, adding: ‘There had better not be any bullying. This will not be tolerated.’

But KDKA said that when their first reports about the hazing emerged, students were congratulating each other rather than expressing remorse for their actions.

‘Good job to the upcoming seniors for making the news for paddling #loveit,’ one wrote, while another added: ‘THAT’S AWESOME! my grade was on TV for hazing #bestupperclassmen.’

The Gazette reported that it is unclear what legal charges the boys could face as they are under 18 but they could face discipline from the school district.

‘The administration will investigate all complaints of hazing and will administer appropriate discipline when violations occur,’ it said in a statement.

‘The consequences include an out-of-order, detention and/or suspension, possible recommendation for expulsion, and/or possible criminal prosecution.’

Superintendent Patrick O’Toole said in a statement that the district was aware that there have been allegations of student hazing over the summer.

He said that the school and police were investigating the claims.

‘The district has strong policies that address student harassment, including hazing, and will take appropriate action against any violators of these policies,’ he said.
