Police were alerted when Patricia Woody’s neighbors heard her children screaming. A Manhattan woman needed more than 100 stitches after her abusive husband repeatedly slashed her in front of their terrified young children, police sources said Tuesday.

John Woody, 40, laid in wait for his estranged wife, Patricia Woody, 33, to return to her apartment in the Riis Houses on the lower East Side Monday evening. He apparently used slivers of wood to clog the key hole on the front door, a police source said.

As she struggled to get the door open, Woody pounced, a second source said.

“She was trying to get the door open with the key when her husband came up behind her with a razor,” the source said. “He cut her across the head, face, neck and back.”

The three horrified children ran for help.

Patricia Woody's slash wounds required more than 100 stitches and staples at Bellevue Hospital.

“We heard the kids running out, knocking on every door asking for help,” a neighbor said. “No one else answered, so I opened the door and I ask what’s going on and he tells me, ‘My dad’s stabbing my mom,’ so I called 911.”

When police arrived, one of the children, a boy believed to be about 6, ran outside.

“He was screaming at the officer, ‘My dad stabbed my mom! My dad stabbed my mom!’ ” the neighbor said.

The suspect fled the scene in a stolen car, police said, but was taken into custody late Tuesday .
